  • I hear you say your priority is survival skills. Will my child learn to actually swim?
Yes. At ISR, we believe that part of survival for a child who can walk is swimming. Children learn the swim-float-swim sequence so that they could get themselves to safety. The difference in our program is that they will learn swimming AND survival skills and how to be an aquatic problem solver.
  • Why are lessons only 10 minutes long?
I know it may seem like a short time but we work VERY hard in a 10 minute lesson. As a former ISR parent I had the same thoughts before I became an ISR instructor. Now after being in the water with them and seeing how hard they work I totally understand why a 10 minute lesson is one of ISRs safety protocols. As adults our bodies are bigger than theirs so they get tired way faster than we do. Anything after 10 minutes greatly increases your childs chances of experiencing physical fatigue. Once physical fatigue has set in, their muscles no longer respond properly. This causes the learning to stop and the retention of the skills is highly unlikely. We don’t want that! ISR instructors are highly trained to detect physical fatigue and for this reason some days we may only work for 5-8 minutes. It will all depend on your child and what we are working on that day.
  • Are ISR lessons safe?
At ISR, the ultimate goal for our students is for them to be safer near water by being skilled to manage the aquatic environment independently. To get to that point, they need to learn in a controlled, positive, and SAFE way. Here’s more about how ISR lessons are designed to keep your child safe: Prior to beginning lessons, your child's medical & developmental history is reviewed by our RET which is a team of nurses as part of our National registration process. If need be, this team will issue specific protocols and directives to your child's Instructor to customize their lessons to meet their unique needs. Once lessons begin, establishing breath control is the ISR Instructor’s #1 priority. Even after your child is fully skilled, the student is not submerged for more than 7 seconds in lessons. A review of your child's daily routine is performed before each lesson (called daily BUDS) to help the Instructor adjust the lesson to maximize the learning experience. The instructor will also monitor your child for fatigue, as well as keep tabs on their physical & psychological well being. As you can see safety is a REALLY big deal for us!
  • I heard ISR instructors throw kids in the water. Is this true?
FALSE! This is common misconception about ISR because of certain videos that have gone viral on social media of people who claim to be ISR and they are not. These are FAKES! A legit ISR instructor from Infant Swimming Resource will NEVER throw your child in the pool. EVER! To make sure your instructor is legit you will be able to find them on the instructor locator at infantswim.com.
  • What will my child learn in ISR lessons?
If your child is 6+ months (sitting unassisted) they will learn if they fall in from any face down position to rollback into a floating posture until help arrives. Fully mobile toddlers and big kids will learn the swim - float - swim sequence. They will learn to swim a short interval, rollback to their float to rest and then swim again until they can safely find an exit or edge of the pool.
  • What if my child cries during lessons?
Crying during lessons at first is completely normal. They are with a new person, in a new environment and learning new skills. As the lessons progress, a trusting relationship develops with the instructor. As your child learns the skills necessary to solve problems in the water, the crying diminishes and the insecurities are replaced with confidence and smiles!
  • Will my child need additional lessons?
Based on our research, we know that refresher lessons are important because children change so much both cognitively and physically during the first 4-5 years of life. It is important that their water survival skills grow with their bodies. Frequency depends on the child's age, growth rate, skill level and confidence level. The goal of refresher lessons is to help your child adjust his/her new body size and weight to his/her existing skill level. Your instructor will work with your child to help fine-tune his or her aquatic experience to assist with building efficiency, which will result in self-confidence. This is especially important if your child has not been able to practice any appropriate aquatic skill between seasons.
  • What is the retention rate of ISR lessons?
ISR claims a retention rate of 94-100% up to one year following lessons. Having said this, children will explore and may pick up bad habits watching other children or with interference like floating in a bathtub or playing on the steps. As your child goes through lessons, you will begin to understand, through communication with your Instructor, what activities may interfere with his/her learned Self-Rescue skills. Contacting and/or returning to your instructor in a timely manner is imperative to maintaining effective habits.
  • Why are lessons 5 days a week?
Repetition and consistency are crucial elements of learning for young children. Research shows that short, more frequent lessons result in higher retention.
  • Will my child fear the water because of lessons?
There is an important difference between being fearful and being apprehensive because you are not yet skilled in a new environment. ISR is not like traditional swim lessons; it is a drowning prevention program that teaches survival swimming. Sometimes as a parent, you make choices for your child's safety, like sitting in a car seat, because you know they are important. The same can be said for ISR. FUN can be defined as when SKILL meets CHALLENGE. Once competent in their skills, many children cannot be dragged away from the pool. They are having entirely too much FUN.
